What is recorded here

According to Holahan (1883, 88), in the N wall of a house built c. 1863 by James S. Loughnan and called Clonard Castle there is, 'a nicely-wrought slab bearing the date 1675. Underneath are the letters ILE [the L being slightly raised]'. The slab was brought from Kilkenny and placed in the wall, 'about twelve feet [c. 3.5m] from the ground'.
