Inscribed stone in An Daingean

Inscribed stone

What is recorded here

An inscribed stone set in the wall of a house beside the castle site in An Daingean bears the date 1586 in relief. The number still stands out on the surface, marking the year someone chose to record on stone rather than leave to memory. It is the kind of date that turns a ordinary wall into a witness, because it insists that the place existed, changed and was remembered at a precise moment.
A stone inserted in the wall of a house adjacent to the site of a castle (KE043-224002-) bears the date 1586 in relief. See attached photograph taken from Bradley 1987, Fig. 25 The above description is derived from J. Cuppage et al., 'Archaeological Survey of the Dingle Peninsula.' (Oidhreacht Chorca Duibhne, 1986) Date of upload: 19 January 2012
