Infants Gurying Ground

Children's burial ground

What is recorded here

Infants Gurying Ground is a children's burial site in County Galway, Ireland, marked by a small oval bank and scattered stones. It sits in low-lying farmland, with three aligned stones hinting at graves laid east to west. Nearby, an ancient enclosure waits fifty metres away, suggesting this was a place set aside for the smallest lives long before records existed.
In low-lying farmland. A small oval CBG (NNE-SSW 10.4m, ESE-WNW 8.2m), in fair condition, enclosed by a low earthen bank. Within the interior are numerous randomly placed set stones, apart from three examples which are aligned N-S indicating graves oriented E-W. An enclosure (GA099-052----) lies c. 50m to W. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
