An unknown forge sat opposite the Tallaght church on the old road, its identity lost but its fire proven by cinders still buried beneath the grass. That much is certain. The rest belongs to imagination: a smith striking hot steel while worshippers waited inside, or a traveller stopping to mend a wheel before darkness took the road. Either way the anvil marked Tallaght as a place where making and praying shared one narrow lane.

Handcock refers to 'an ancient smith's forge nearly opposite the church, on the side of the old road' (Handcock 1899, 42). He also states that 'the cinders were to be seen on raising the sods' (ibid). The precise location of this monument is unknown. Compiled by Geraldine Stout
