Industrial chimney in Townparks (upper Dundalk By.)

A tall stepped chimney rising high over the roof of what appears to be a two–storey Victorian building on the S side of York Street could be from a seventeenth century industrial building such as a bakery or a brew-house. The lane is not depicted on the 1594 map of Henry Duke, but it is shown on the map of 1675 where it is called ‘Long staff gate Lane’, although without houses on the S side. However, single houses are represented on the S side of the lane on the Richardson map of 1680 and the chimney could belong to one of these. It was first reported by Angela Dullaghan.
