Indicated

Fairy fort / ringfort

What is recorded here

Indicated is a vanished fairy fort in County Mayo, Ireland, where local tradition claims an underground passage still breathes beneath the pasture. The earth swallowed the ringfort between surveys, erasing the D-shaped bank and hiding the chamber from human eyes. Cattle still avoid the exact spot, suggesting the ground remembers the door even when the sky forgets the name.
In pasture, located on gently elevated ground, overlooking an expanse of lowlying pasture. This ringfort is shown the 1838 OS 6-inch map as a subcircular embanked enclosure, clipped at E by a N−S field fence; a D-shaped enclosure (c. 30m N−S; c. 20m E−W to fence), bordered on the straight side at E by a N−S field boundary, is shown on the 25-inch plan; it is not shown on the 1930 OS 6-inch edition. It has been levelled and there is no trace at ground level. According to local tradition, it contains a Man-made underground passage (MA072-053001-).
