What is recorded here
Indicated is a fairy fort in County Mayo, Ireland. The earthen ring stands on a broad terrace above Lackan Bay, watching pasture and estuary while keeping its purpose hidden.
In improved pasture, located on a broad level terrace on a NW-facing slope, which provides good views to S and W over undulating pasture, and to N over flat esturine lands at the S end of Lackan Bay. It is located close to the S boundary of the townland.
Raised circular area (23.8m N-S; 22m E-W) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 3.5m; int. H 0.2m at NW, 0.65m at SE) and enclosed by an external fosse (Wth c. 3m), which is evident as a shallow surface depression. Stones protrude from the top of the bank in parts. The bank is noticeably lower at the NE, but there is no clearly defined entrance feature. There is a narrow eroded break (Wth 0.6m) at SW. The interior is level; there is a
small, grass-covered rise (Diam. c. 2m; H 0.3m), probably a field clearance heap, slightly E of centre.
