What is recorded here
Indicated is a circular earthen fort on a Kerry hilltop, marked by a broken bank, a hidden underground passage and a possible capstone near the entrance. Cattle still tear gaps in the rim, yet the shape remains clear enough to suggest a place where people once drew a line between the ordinary field and something deeper. The story recorded in the 1840s called it a cavern, which fits the dark opening still set into the hill.
In pasture, on top of a hill. A circular area (c. 29m N-S) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 2.6m; int. H 0.35m; ext. H 1m) with numerous cattle gaps. The bank is eroded N-NE. The raised interior is slightly uneven. A Man-made underground passage (KE058-090001-) is situated in the NW quadrant. Small shallow depressions occur to the S and SW of the Man-made underground passage. A large stone, which may be a capstone, is situated to the S of the Man-made underground passage opening. There is a small, circular mound (L c. 2m; Wth c. 1m) in the NE quadrant. A linear feature (on a N-S axis), which is situated E of the possible entrance to the Man-made underground passage, appears to extend to the S and SW of the Man-made underground passage opening. A group of three large stones, arranged side by side, are to the S of the possible capstone. This is the rath recorded in the 1840s as being in the 'N.E. end' of Scarteen and as having a 'cavern' (OSNB, Aghadoe, no. 1, 7).
