What is recorded here

Indicated was a fairy fort crowning a Mayo knoll, visible on maps from 1838 to 1931 before ploughs and patience erased its rim. It still holds a flat subcircular breath at the summit, wide enough for a dozen people to walk in a circle without touching elbows. The land keeps its shape even when its name fades, as if remembering the fort were easier for soil than for people.

In pasture, crowning top of knoll, with good views over gently undulating pasture and stretches of lowlying bog. A circular enclosure (diam. c. 30m) is shown on the 1838 and 1931 OS 6-inch maps. It has been levelled. A flat subcircular area (c. 20.4m E–W; c. 16m N–S) is evident on the summit of the knoll, defined at NNW–ESE by traces of a levelled scarp; elsewhere the scarp is levelled so that it merges seamlessly with the natural hill slope.
