Indicated is a crannog in County Clare, Ireland. It is an artificial island, usually built of stone, wood and soil, raised above wet ground so people could live, keep animals or store what rain and tide threatened. The name gives no further detail, but the form is clear: a small made land where humans resisted the lake or bog.
