Possible holy well described by Ronan (1928, 150) as at ‘Kilmanoge (properly, Kill-na-mban-og), i.e., the Church of the Virgins (WI030-035----) is completely erased. And so also is the burying ground. But the triangular enclosure, about 60 yds. each side, with old thorns and elders, has been always held in veneration and has never been cultivated. There is a neglected well near the N.E. angle, and the upper stone of a small broken quern lies near’. A well indicated on the OS 25-inch map appears to be the neglected well mentioned by Ronan. Linked to an early Christian site dedicated to "the Virgins," likely a local group of female saints or martyrs, the well reflects a tradition of holy wells associated with female holy figures in Ireland. The name Kill-na-mban-og (Church of the Young Women or Virgins) suggests a cult of virginity or female monasticism, common in early Irish Christianity.
