What is recorded here
Indicated is a vanished fort on low ground beside the Fane River in County Monaghan, Ireland. It appeared on maps as a small embanked circle, then faded into pasture and memory. The river may have taken it, or people may have flattened it for grass. Either way, the land kept the shape long enough for mapmakers to draw it before forgetting.
Located on low-lying ground c. 50m W of a NNW-SSE section of the Fane River. It is depicted as a small embanked enclosure (ext. diam. c. 15m) described as a ‘fort’ in gothic lettering on the 1834 edition of the OS 6-inch map and as an equally small enclosure incorporated into a NE-SW field bank on the 1907 edition. No archaeological feature is visible at ground level in reclaimed pasture on any aerial images (OSAP).
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Monaghan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
