Indicated, Grange East was a bawn beside a tower house in County Galway, marked in 1901 by an arched entrance wide enough for a cart or a proud man to pass through. Steps may have climbed to its top, letting someone look down the eight metres of surviving wall or call across the yard. By 2011 the arch had collapsed, removing the gate and leaving only the chance that stones still remember the shape of the opening.

When initally visited in 1983, a section of the bawn wall survived at the NW corner of the tower house (GA070-067----). It abuted the W end of the N wall and was evident for 8m running on a N-S axis. Towards its N end is was a dilapidated arched ope (Wth c. 2.4m). Nolan (1901a, 41) described this as 'the arched entrance to the bawn', noting that 'steps ascended to the top of the archway': these were not located. On a revisit to the area in July 2011, it was noted that the 'arched entrance' had collapsed. Compiled by: Olive Alcock Date of upload: 10 July 2023
