What is recorded here
The fairy fort or earthen ringfort in Gorteenavalla is in County Tipperary, Ireland. It occupied a slight rise above a river valley, with the river flowing about 20 metres to the southwest. A circular enclosure appeared on the 1840 map, but by 1902 its southern half had been destroyed and field boundaries had been put in place. The site and those boundaries were later levelled, although a very low bank still hints at a circular area about 23 metres north to south.
Situated on a slight rise above a river valley, in pasture. The river flows c. 20m SW of the site in a roughly E-W direction. Depicted as a circular enclosure on the 1st (1840) ed. OS 6-inch map. By the latest ed. (1902) the S half of the site had been destroyed and field boundaries put in place. The site has been levelled as are the field boundaries to the S and SW, however, a hint of a circular area (c. 23m N-S) is discernible as a very low bank.
The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary. Vol. 1 - North Tipperary' compiled by Jean Farrelly and Caimin O'Brien (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2002). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
