What is recorded here
Indicated is a dilapidated fairy fort on a Mayo drumlin, ringed by hazel trees and marked by a shallow oval hollow that may hide a collapsed passage. Children may have buried their dead among the loose stones, turning a ordinary field into a quiet chamber for small ghosts. The land still holds that much closer than any map admits.
In the SE corner of a pasture field, located on top of a rise or drumlin with a fall of ground to W and N, and overlooked to E by a higher ridge. Slightly raised circular area (29m E–W; 28m N–S) defined by a scarp (H 1-1.5m). The scarp is somewhat dilapidated and densely ringed by hazel trees. At S it is incorporated into an E–W property fence. At E a remnant of an original bank may survive as a low earthen rise beneath the roots of a cluster of hazel trees, but elsewhere no remains of an upstanding bank are evident. In parts, stones protrude from the scarp, and at NE a concentration of large, irregular-shaped boulders lies on the scarp, and adjacent to it within the interior. The interior is level. Trees grow through out and the surface is strewn with loose stones. Amongst the loose stones, there are several low stones (max. dim. 0.2m; H 0.15m) embedded in the surface. These are more evident in the E half of the interior. Some may be gravemarkers relating to the use of the rath as a children’s burial ground (SL090-038002-). In the SE quadrant there is a shallow oval hollow (8m NW–SE; 6.5m NE–SW; D 0.4m) with a scattering of loose stones around its perimeter and in its base. This may mark a collapsed Man-made underground passage (SL090-038002-). There is a rath (SL090-101----) c. 20m to SSE.
