Indicated

Fairy fort / stone ringfort

What is recorded here

Indicated is a subrectangular cashel on a low Clare ridge, mapping the west slope since 1842. Its double-faced wall still stands tall enough to block the horizon, though tumble and a later build have blurred the inner line. The east half dips south while the west half leans west, as if the fort itself tilted under the weight of forgotten lives.
On a low rise on the W slope of a NE-SW ridge in hazel and rough pasture, commanding views from SSE to NNW. Indicated on the 1842 and 1920 eds. of the OS 6-inch map. This subrectangular cashel (36m NW-SE; 35m NE-SW) is defined by a double-faced wall (Wth 1.8-3.2m; int. H 1-1.2m; ext. H 0.5- 2.2m at NW). The outer wall-face is generally built of regular, roughly coursed blocks. Where visible on the SE and SW sides, the inner wall-face is made of smaller, less regular stones. Tumble from the wall obscures the lower part of the inner wall-face. There is a modern gap in the wall at ENE. A later wall is built over the outer wall-face of the cashel. The E half of the interior slopes gently to the S, while the W half slopes to the W. Compiled by: Mary Tunney and Conn Herriott Date of upload: 20 June 2023
