Indicated

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Indicated is a vanished ringfort on a steep Mayo ridge, last drawn as a twenty-metre circle before pasture and forgetting erased it. The place still belongs to sight, memory and the risk of losing what stopped being useful.
In pasture, located on the narrow top of a steep-sided N–S ridge, with extensive views in all direction. Located towards the N end of the ridge where there is a more gradual fall of ground. Shown on the 1837 OS 6-inch map as a ringfort-like enclosure, and on the 1930 edition as a subcircular hachured enclosure (diam. c. 20m), incorporated into a later field boundary on the S side. This possible rath, has been levelled; there is no visible trace at ground level. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 16 April 2018
