Indicated

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Indicated is a broad earthen ringfort in County Mayo, its twenty-six to twenty-eight metre circle marked by a six-metre bank now bitten by livestock gaps and a later field wall. The northern edge has lost much of its substance to grazing, yet the south remains high enough to suggest a deliberate boundary rather than a random heap. The name itself points at designation instead of memory, as if the place was always more label than story.
In pasture on a gentle E-facing slope. A roughly circular area (int. diams. 28m N-S; 26m E-W) is enclosed by a broad bank of earth and stone (av. Wth 6m; int. H 0.5-1.4m; ext. H 1.3-1.8m). The enclosing bank is denuded by livestock along the N and is cut by two narrow livestock gaps at SE and a wider modern gap (Wth 1.3m) at W. A later field boundary wall runs WNW-ESE across the S sector of the level interior. Date of visit: 19-3-2025 Compiled by: Gearóid Conroy
