Located on the S-facing slope of a N-S drumlin ridge and overlooking a slight col at the N end of Cloone village. The site of St Cruimhthear Fraoch’s early monastery (LE033-006001-) is centred on the old graveyard that was attached to the S of the now defunct Church of Ireland church of St. James. This is a subrectangular graveyard (dims c. 60m N-S; c. 27m E-W at S to c. 50m E-W at N) defined by masonry walls. A cross-base, the head of a round-headed window, and four cross-inscribed stones are in the graveyard, which also has a headstone with carvings of animals in false relief on the back. Two medieval stone heads carved on corbels and part of the shaft of a high cross (Grant 1994) are now incorporated in the reconstructed graveyard wall at S. The graveyard itself has largely nineteenth and twentieth century headstones. It was extended to the E before 1995 and this area was extended further to the N by 2012 (OSAP). A portal dolmen; likely dating to the Neolithic or early Bronze Age. Its location near an early Christian monastic site suggests possible reuse or spiritual significance in later periods.
