What is recorded here
On level ground in hazel and rough pasture at the bottom of an E-facing slope, with a NNE-SSW rocky ridge immediately to the W. Indicated on the 1842 and 1920 eds. of the OS 6-inch map. In combination with an adjacent enclosure (CL010-100002-) c. 18m to the ENE, named ‘Carrachantaggart’ on the 1897 OS 25-inch plan and the 1920 ed. of the OS 6-inch map, and ‘Cathracha an tSagairt’ on Robinson’s (1977) map. The name may also refer to a mass rock (CL010-100003-) marked on Robinson’s map to the N. A
large subrectangular enclosure (int. dims. 57m NNE-SSW; 50m WNW-ESE) defined by a large, collapsed, double-faced wall (Wth 2.6m; int. H 0.5-0.6m; ext. H 0.6-1.2m) and associated collapse (combined Wth 4.8-5.5m) on all sides except at the W where the perimeter is built against the severe slope (H c. 10m) of the rocky ridge. At the S the central section of the wall overlies a knob of bedrock. A later drystone wall (H 1m) is built over the probable outer wall-face along this side. The interior slopes to the ESE. A natural channel/gryke (Wth at top 3.4m; D 0.5m) runs E-W across the SW interior. There is a small stone cell against the inner edge of the wall at the S. A cave (CL010-100004-) is reported (pers. comm. Marion Dowd) to be at ITM 527772, 695820, within the enclosure although it is marked on Robinson's map just to the N of the enclosure. Another enclosure (CL010-100002-) lies c. 18m to the ENE.
