What is recorded here

Indicated is a densely overgrown oval mound on the east bank of the Flesk River, locally called Cahireenaleanbh and remembered as a children's burial ground. Stones taken from its wall in recent decades have thinned the ancient circle, yet the mound still holds its shape in the pasture. The idea that small lives were laid to rest inside a fairy fort blends human grief with older strangeness, making the place feel both tender and unsafe.

In level pasture on the E bank of the Flesk River. This possible cashel is indicated on the 1846 OS 6-inch map as a circular enclosure (diam. c. 35m) in a wooded area and on the 1893-4 OS 6-inch map as an oval enclosure (c. 35m NW-SE; c. 30m NE-SW) also in a wooded area. It is now evident as a densely overgrown oval mound (c. 40m N-S; c. 35m E-W). According to local information, stones were removed from here in the recent past. It is known locally as a children's burial ground (KE067-097----) called 'Cahireenaleanbh'. In the 1940s a place called 'Cahireen na Leanbh' was recorded as 'a circle surrounded by a stone wall' which was used as a burial ground (Schools Manuscript, Co. Kerry).
