What is recorded here
Indicated is a subcircular rath on a slight rise in County Clare pasture, facing Cahercommaun cashel half a kilometre away. Its broad bank still stands sixty-six centimetres to one metre six high, choked with briar and blackthorn, while a later field wall cuts along its inner edge. The gap at the south-west may be the original entrance, but the radiating walls visible in satellite imagery suggest the rath once anchored a whole settlement rather than standing alone.
On a slight rise in gently undulating improved pasture, with commanding views in most directions – particularly towards the S where Cahercommaun cashel (CL010-064003-) is visible c. 570m to the SE. Hachured on both the first (1842) and Cassini (1920) editions of the OS 6-inch map. This subcircular rath (int. diams. 20m E-W; 18.5m N-S; ext. dims. 32m N-S; 31m E-W) is defined by a broad bank (Wth 6.6-7m; int. H 0.6-1.4m; ext. H 0.8-1.6m) which is overgrown with briar and blackthorn SSW-NNW. A later field wall (part of the townland boundary with Castletown to the W) runs along the inner edge of the bank SSW-NNW and cleared field stones have been piled on the bank NNW-E. An overgrown gap (Wth 2m) at the SSW may be the original entrance. The interior is generally flat. Levelled, grass-covered field walls are visible in satellite imagery (Digital Globe 2011-2013) radiating off the rath at N and SSE.
