Bawn

What is recorded here

Cappagh bawn stands beside the towerhouse on a low rocky knoll where collapsed rubble almost erases the wall. The surviving facing stones still mark a metre-thick boundary, suggesting the site excluded as much as it enclosed. It remains a sharp-edged shadow beside a better-known house, waiting for someone to walk its lost line.
To the N, E and W of the towerhouse of Cappagh (CL006-064003-), on a low rocky knoll surrounded to S, W and N by rough outcropping rock. Indicated on the 1842 ed. of the OS 6-inch maps and hachured on the 1915 ed. Listed as ‘Earthwork’ in the SMR (1992) and the RMP (1996). The bawn wall is almost completely gone and obscured by collapsed rubble. Occasional inner and outer facing-stones give a wall thickness of 1m. Vestiges of earthworks to the S may also be contemporary (Ua Cróinín and Breen 1997). Compiled by: Mary Tunney and Ros Ó Maoldúin Date of upload: 13 September 2021
