Indicated

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Indicated is a fairy fort hidden in West Cork pasture, its earthen bank and outer ditch still marking a circular boundary on the slope. The land has pulled the structure back into grass and shadow, yet the shape resists forgetting. People may have lived there before becoming a warning, or the warning may have formed first and people followed it. Either way the ground kept its shape while memory changed.
In pasture, on break in SSE-facing slope. Heavily overgrown circular area, enclosed by earthen bank; external fosse visible to SSE and W. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
