In pasture, c. 60m S of River Funshion. Indicated as rock outcrop on 1906 and 1934 OS 6-inch maps. Natural rock outcrop (2m E-W; T 0.5m; H 1.3m); lower outcrop on N side. Known locally as mass rock and field known as 'altar field'. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Linked to Catholic clandestine worship during the Penal Times, the site is traditionally known as a mass rock, used for secret religious gatherings. The surrounding field, referred to as "al," may indicate historical association with ecclesiastical or ritual land use.
