Aughnanure Castle was built in the late 15th century by Richard Ó Conor, King of Connacht, and is remembered as a significant stronghold of the western Irish clans, later associated with the resistance to English rule. It is important as a symbol of Gaelic Irish power and the struggle for independence in medieval Ireland.
