Ilkley Crags is a sandstone sea cliff or coastal rock feature formed during the Permian period, approximately 290 to 250 million years ago, through the deposition and lithification of aeolian (wind-blown) sands. It is notable as part of the extensive Pennine Dales geology and for its accessibility and historical use as a recreational and geological study site.
