Hut site in Randalstown

Hut site

What is recorded here

No Irish language exists in the provided facts. I will answer in English as requested. In 1975, E. P. Kelly excavated a circular hut site inside the rath at Randalstown, revealing a small dwelling defined by a slot trench near an older rectangular house. The ditch yielded glass beads, jet fragments, a stone spindle whorl, iron knives, and copious cattle and pig bone, suggesting a busy domestic life rather than a grand ceremonial center. People likely cooked, crafted, and discarded ordinary tools within that narrow ring, turning a quiet corner of County Meath into a laboratory for human habit.
In the SW quadrant of the interior of the rath (ME025-005----). Excavation (E000144) by E. P. Kelly in 1975 recorded a circular hut-site (diam. c. 5m) defined by a slot-trench in the vicinity of the rectangular house attributed to the Neolithic. The stratigraphy and artefacts recovered related exclusively to the circular hut-site and artefacts recovered included glass beads, two fragments of a jet or lignite bracelet, a stone spindle whorl and some iron knives. Copious amounts of animal bone, largely cattle and pig, were recovered from the fosse which also preserved pieces of leather and a wooden stave. Some post-medieval hearths and pits were recorded, particularly in the fosse. (Kelly 1977) Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 29 March 2023 Kelly, E. P. 1977 A Future for our Past.
