Melted snow hissed on hot stones while a person sat inside House 2, waiting for the hillfort crowd to pass. The oval chamber measured six metres along its longest edge, with a double-kerbed wall and a narrow western entrance lined by radial slabs. It belonged between the inner and middle ramparts of Mooghaun hillfort, close enough to the cashel for danger and distance to share one breath.

Situated between the inner and middle ramparts of Mooghaun hillfort (CL042-074001-) in the SW quadrant of the hillfort and immediately N of a cashel (CL042-074002-). One of three hut sites in this area excavated in 1994-5 as part of the North Munster Project of the Discovery Programme. ‘House 2’ was revealed following vegetation clearance in 1994 and was excavated in 1995. It is an oval area (ext. dims. 6m N-S; int. dims 3.8m N-S by 3m E-W) defined by a double-kerbed wall with a rubble fill (Wth 1.5m; H 0.4m). The entrance (Wth 0.6m) is at WSW and was defined by small, radially placed slabs lining each side. A single transverse stone at the outside may have served as a threshold. House 2 produced a radiocarbon date of cal. AD 1275-1377. ‘House 1’ and ‘House 3’ lie 17m to the W and 34m to the WSW respectively.
