What is recorded here
Dún Sheáin contains four possible hut sites, including one where ruined walls still rise 1.25m beside the ringfort bank. People may have kept goats or sheep there, hidden from danger during the War of Independence, or simply sheltered in a small place large enough for one room. The stones leave that choice behind, but the narrow outline and surviving height make the purpose easy to imagine.
This overgrown foundation abuts the bank of ringfort (KE053-077----) at ESE. It measures 3m N-S x 2m E-W internally, and the ruined walls are up to 1.25m high. It was apparently used as a goat/sheep-shelter and, during the War of Independence, as a hide-out (local information).
One of four possible hut sites within ringfort (see also KE053-077003-, KE053-077004- and KE053-077005-).
The above description is derived from J. Cuppage (compiler) 'Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey.' Ballyferriter. Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne (1986), no. 393. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
