What is recorded here

No one knows who built the round stone hut in Cill Mhic An Domhnaigh, but it stood tall enough for a person to walk inside and small enough to force everyone into close company. Shells, animal bones and fire debris filled the floor, suggesting meals and warmth rather than secrecy. The enclosure vanished before the second survey and the hut lost part of its wall, yet the remaining stones still mark a place where ordinary life happened far from roads and memory.

Marked on the 1st edition of the OS maps as a circular enclosure KE052-100---- with clochaun KE052-100001-, this site appears to have been considerably modified by 1895 (2nd edition, OS map), and no trace of the enclosure now survives. The hut has also been partly destroyed. It was a circular corbelled drystone structure, 3.85m in diameter internally. The surviving wall is 1.75m high and 1.2m thick. Shells, animal bones and evidence of burning were discovered in the interior (Macalister 1899, 215-6; local information). The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne.
