Enclosure in Cill Mhic An Domhnaigh was a circular stone chamber where shells, animal bones and fire debris still lay when last described, but even its mapping marker has faded from the land. The chamber measured 3.85m across inside, with walls a metre and two-tenths thick, large enough for one person to crouch and small enough that every sound would have returned doubled. It may have been a kitchen, a shrine or a child’s hiding place during storms, but the enclosure around it is gone and the chamber itself is broken open. What remains is a hole in the ground wearing the shape of a room, waiting for someone to remember why it was built.
Marked on the 1st edition of the OS maps as a circular enclosure with clochaun, this site appears to have been considerably modified by 1895 (2nd edition, OS map), and no trace of the enclosure now survives. The hut has also been partly destroyed. It was a circular corbelled drystone structure, 3.85m in diameter internally. The surviving wall is 1.75m high and 1.2m thick. Shells, animal bones and evidence of burning were discovered in the interior (Macalister 1899, 215-6; local information).
The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey. Ballyferriter. Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne’ (1986), no. 712. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
