Hut site

What is recorded here

Doonanore Castle still casts its shadow eastward across a steep north-facing slope where a four-metre circular hut once broke the green. That small dwelling likely served the castle household, giving ordinary people a place to shelter, heat food or wait for orders beneath the tower’s watch. The earthworks and slope preserved the shape long after wooden walls rotted, while grass marked the old floor through differences in growth. What is missing is the sound of that house: voices, laughter, fear or the smell of smoke.
On a break, on a steep N-facing slope enclosed by earthworks (CO153-015003-) to the E of the tower house known as Doonanore Castle (CO153-015002-). The remains of a possible circular hut site (diam. c. 4m) defined by differential growth patterns are visible on this level break. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). Date of upload: 22 December 2009
