Humphrey Lloyd was born in Dublin on 16 April 1800, the first of ten children of mathematician Bartholomew Lloyd and Eleanor McLaughlin. He excelled at Trinity College, winning the gold medal for science in 1819 after studying under his father’s new continental calculus methods. Though appointed a junior fellow in 1824, heavy teaching duties consumed the hours he needed for research, forcing him to publish his treatise on light and vision in fragments rather than one complete volume.
