Hugh Annesley, 5th Earl Annesley, was born in Dublin on 26 January 1831, the second son of a noble house that would survive two world wars and several marriages. He fought in the Kaffir Wars and took a bullet through his jaw at the Battle of the Alma before retiring as a Colonel and becoming a reluctant MP for Cavan. His life moved between castle halls and battlefield trenches, marking him as a man shaped by violence yet held back by duty.
