The Hospital of St. James was founded by Archbishop Henry of Dublin at the Steyn c. 1216. It was referred to as Lazar's Hill up to the 19th century (De Courcy 1996, 381-2). The endowments included the church of Delgany (Gwynn and Hadcock 1970, 350; Bradley & King 1987, 2, 147; FMD map (1978 J1). This was the embarking point for pilgrims to Compostella in Spain. In 1992 some human remains were exposed at Tara Street south of the site of the medieval hospital (pers. com. C. Manning). There are no visible remains above ground.
