Horn Head House

Situated on SE facing slope of rising ground with good views of Dunfanaghy bay to the SE and higher ground to NW. Horn Head House, home of the Stewart family formerly of Horn Head from the time of its purchase by Captain Charles Stewart in 1700 until its sale in 1934 by Lindesay Stewart. The house has been unoccupied since 1934 . Horn Head House is the site of a multi-period building consisting of a 5-bay two storey house built onto the front of a possible late 17th or early 18th century house consisting of a two storey central block with a rectangular wing flanking either side of the central block. Statute niches are visible in the E and W faces of the flankers either side of the central block. A complex series of stone lined drains situated c. 0.12m below the surface of the ground have been uncovered immediately E of the house and appear to represent early 18th century drainage channels. These impressive drainage channels (Wth 0.35-0.5m; H 0.83m) are stone lined and stand 5 courses high and are roofed with flagstone lintels. A possible series of rectangular bee-boles are visible in the garden wall to the NE of the house. Described by Bence-Jones as 'A plain C18 2 storey gable-ended house of 5 bays; with a central Wyatt window and a door with sidelights under a primitive pediment. Rambling outbuildings attached to house, with several archways' (Bence-Jones 1988, 155). This house is listed as a Protected Structure by Donegal Co. Co.
