Holy Well

Close to E bank of the Yellow River in low-lying boggy terrain. Marked within an enclosed oval tree copse (NW-SE c. 40m, NE-SW c. 30m) on OS 6-inch maps. Extensive field clearance has occurred here and apart from a blocked-up pool of water with a small drain leading from it to the stream, no visible surface trace survives. Linked to Saint Gobnait, the well is traditionally associated with cures for eye ailments and protection from fire. Local folklore recalls that the saint established a community of metalworkers in the area, and the well was believed to have healing properties connected to her patronage of blacksmiths and beekeepers.
