Holy well in Cladhnach

Close to E gable of a modern house at Crompán, on N side of coast road. Known locally as Tobar Mhuire, it consists of a smooth natural pothole D 0.2m) in a rock outcrop, with a round flat stone as a lid. A saint's footprints are pointed out in the rock beside it, and at the front of the house (info. T. Robinson). Not visited. Linked to St. Mary (Tobar Mhuire), the well is traditionally associated with healing and protection, with the footprint suggesting a local tradition of the saint’s physical presence or blessing at the site. Such wells were often sites of pilgrimage and seasonal rituals in pre-modern Ireland.
