Holy well in Ballyvalloo Lower

The site of St Peter's Well, at which patterns were held on 29th June in the 19th century according to John O’Donovan writing c. 1840 (O'Flanagan 1933a, vol. 1, 353), is c. 100m E of the parish church of Ballyvalloo parish (WX033-010001-) and its graveyard (WX033-010002-), but the precise location of the well is not known. Linked to St Peter, the well was a site of pilgrimage and pattern days held on 29th June, the saint’s feast day, reflecting early Christian traditions of healing and communal worship. Such wells were often believed to have curative properties, particularly for ailments of the eyes and general health.
