Holed stone in Cinn Aird Thoir (tc Cinn Aird)

Holed stone

What is recorded here

Red sandstone pokes through the soil at Cinn Aird Thoir, its central hole catching rain and shadow. It marks grave 402, yet its shape suggests an older purpose before the churchyard claimed it. Perhaps people once tied strings, dropped coins or watched shadows pass through the opening. The stone has endured every burial and storm because it gave back attention, not answers.
In 2011 a graveyard survey carried out by Ann Frykler and Robert Hanbidge of Headland Archaeology Ltd. recorded the following details about a possible holed stone (Miscellaneous No. 16): ‘Partially protruding from the earth, piece of old red sandstone with central hole, also forming gravemarker to Grave No. 402’ (Hanbidge 2011, 13). Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien based on details provided by Robert Hanbidge Date of upload: 1 July 2022
