HMS *Vanguard* was a British battleship lost in 1917 during a gunnery exercise at Scapa Flow, Orkney, when a magazine explosion sank her shortly after leaving port. The disaster resulted in the deaths of 844 crew members, making it one of the worst peacetime naval disasters in British history; the wreck is now a protected site and a significant maritime memorial.
