HMS Royal Oak was a British Royal Navy battlecruiser launched in 1914 and sunk on 14 October 1939 in Scapa Flow, Orkney, by the German U-boat U-47. The attack resulted in the deaths of 833 crew members and marked one of the most significant early naval losses of World War II, highlighting the vulnerability of even secure naval bases.
