What is recorded here

HMS Hampshire was a British light cruiser that was lost on 5 June 1916 in Birsay Bay, off the Orkney Islands, when it struck a mine laid by the German U-boat U-29. The ship was carrying General Sir John Jellicoe, the recently appointed Commander-in-Chief of the British Expeditionary Force, who was among the 616 lives lost; only 31 crew members survived. The wreck is considered historically significant due to the high-profile casualties and its association with World War I naval history.

The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
