Castle Green is the flat, green scar left by Hereford Castle, one of only four known castles in England that date from before the Norman Conquest. Ralph, son of the Count of Vexin, raised a timber stronghold there before 1052, but Gruffyd ap Llewellyn burnt it in 1055. Later kings, barons and Welsh raiders kept returning to the same river-bent ridge, until human pride tired of carrying stones and the grass swallowed the ramparts.

The National Heritage List for England records Hereford Castle as a scheduled monument. The saved point comes from the centre supplied by the official record. Listing does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

Hereford Castle was built in the 11th century, following the Norman Conquest, and was held by several prominent noble families, including the de Say and later the Earls of Worcester. It is important as a key medieval fortress in the Welsh Marches and as an example of Norman military architecture.
