This blue commemorative plaque records: The Cockleshell Heroes The Officers who launched the Commando raid on Bordeaux Harbour in 1942 lived in this house whilst training at the Lumps Fort at Southsea. Only two survived to make it home, of the others, two were drowned, six were captured and executed. Erected by Portsmouth City Council on the 70th Anniversary of the Raid. Major Herbert Hasler OBE DSO and Lt John Mackinnon were key officers in the "Cockleshell Heroes," a commando unit that undertook a daring raid on Bordeaux Harbour in 1942, significantly disrupting German shipping operations; their mission, though costly with high casualties, exemplified bravery and innovation in military tactics during World War II.
