Henry Tresham was born in County Dublin around 1751, the local soil that first shaped the hand which would later paint grand history for London. He learned his earliest lessons at the Dublin Art School under W. Ennis before leaving Ireland in 1775 to spend fourteen years among Roman antiquities and dealers. That long Roman immersion gave his later British canvases their scale and strangeness, carrying a piece of Dublin’s restless energy into the heart of the Royal Academy.
