Henry Boyle, 1st Earl of Shannon

Henry Boyle, born around 1682 in Castlemartyr, County Cork, became the long-serving speaker of the Irish House of Commons and a defiant voice for Irish interests against British Crown officials. He represented Midleton, Kilmallock, and County Cork for nearly fifty years, leading the Munster squadron through parliamentary storms until a legal crisis forced him to trade his speaker’s chair for a peerage.
