Hearth in Cill Mhuirbhigh

During the course of research excavations in the W half of the inner enclosure at Dún Aonghasa (GA110-039----) two hearths (GA110-039012- and GA110-039013-) were uncovered c. 3.5m apart towards the S end of Cutting 1. The most northerly example, F246, and was located 3.3m to the E of pit F234 (GA110-039009-). It was stone lined. Its base consisted of a flat slab that was enclosed on the E and W sides by a single stone set on edge. The fill consisted of ash and charcoal-flecked clay containing a few limpet shell. No finds were recovered (Cotter 2012, vol. 1, 325-6). Two more hearths (GA110-039010- and GA110-039011-) were revealed to the N of the pit.
