Hearth in Cill Mhuirbhigh

During the course of research excavations in the W half of the inner enclosure at Dún Aonghasa (GA110-039----) two hearths (GA110-039012- and GA110-039013-) were uncovered c. 3.5m apart towards the S end of Cutting 1. This southerly hearth (F245) was defined by a spread of light grey ash and ash-flecked soil (max D 0.08m). Limpet shells were recovered at its E edge and fish bones and scales were identified within the soil. Microfossil analysis produced on barley grain and one barley/wheat grain (Cotter 2012, vol. 1, 325-6). Two more hearths (GA110-039010- and GA110-039011-) were revealed to the N of the pit.
